Fixing Frost Heave Damage Without Making the Lawn Worse

Frost heave can leave a lawn looking oddly lumpy after winter: raised strips along a driveway, turf that feels loose underfoot, small mounds around shrubs, or bare patches where grass roots were pushed up and dried out. The tempting response is to grab a roller, flatten everything, and spread seed. That is also one of the fastest ways to compact wet spring soil and create drainage trouble that lasts longer than the frost damage.

The best repair starts with waiting for the ground to settle enough that you are fixing the lawn, not fighting frozen, waterlogged soil. In a typical cool-climate yard, that window is usually after the last hard freezes but before the grass has put on heavy spring growth.

First, decide whether it is truly frost heave

Frost heave happens when moisture in the soil freezes and expands, lifting soil and turf. As it thaws, the ground does not always return to exactly the same level. Clay-heavy soil, poorly drained spots, new sod, and areas beside hard surfaces are the usual trouble zones.

A frost-heaved lawn has a particular feel. The turf may sit higher than the surrounding grass, and a section can feel springy or detached when you step on it. If you gently pull a loose tuft, you may see roots sitting above the soil rather than anchored into it.

Do not assume every bump is frost heave. Mole tunnels create long, soft raised runs that collapse easily. Grubs cause turf to peel back like a carpet because roots have been eaten. A tree root creates a firm, permanent rise that will not flatten after thaw. Fixing those problems with topsoil alone only hides them briefly.

A quick identification list

  • Likely frost heave: irregular raised areas appearing after freeze-thaw weather, especially in low or wet sections.
  • Likely poor drainage: the same area stays soft, muddy, or puddled after nearby lawn has dried.
  • Likely animal activity: visible tunnels, loose soil pushed up from below, or damaged roots.
  • Likely root-related: a hard, stable hump near an established tree or large shrub.
  • Likely settling rather than heaving: a low depression near a trench, old stump, patio edge, or recently built area.

When frost heave does not need repair

A few shallow ripples are not automatically a lawn project. If the grass is still rooted, the surface is less than about half an inch uneven, and the area is not a trip hazard or mowing problem, leave it alone for a few weeks. Soil often settles naturally as spring moisture drains and microbial activity resumes.

I have seen homeowners level a harmless March bump, only to find that the lawn beside it settled in April and their “repair” became the new high spot. A little patience is often the correct treatment.

Do not level a lawn while a boot print fills with water. Wet soil can be reshaped easily, but it also compacts easily—and compaction is one reason frost heave keeps returning.

Repair loose turf first

Grass that has been lifted off the soil needs contact with the soil again before it can recover. This is especially common on slopes and in exposed areas where frozen ground lifts the crown of the plant and late-winter wind dries it out.

Use a rake, your feet, and light pressure

Wait until the soil is moist but no longer squishy. Rake away dead grass and winter debris with a leaf rake or flexible lawn rake. Do not aggressively dethatch; frost-damaged grass already has stressed roots.

For a small lifted patch, press it down with your foot or a flat board. On a larger patch, a lightweight lawn roller can help, but only when the soil has drained. Fill the roller no more than halfway with water. The goal is root-to-soil contact, not packing the entire root zone flat.

Then water lightly if the weather turns dry. A loose grass crown can dry out surprisingly fast in a windy spring, even when the soil beneath it looks damp.

How to level raised and sunken areas

Once loose turf is pressed down, look at the lawn from a low angle in early morning or late afternoon. Side light makes uneven spots obvious. Mark the areas with small flags or inverted cups before you start; frost-heave bumps become harder to see once you are standing in the middle of them.

For shallow unevenness: topdress, do not bury

For dips up to about one inch deep, apply a thin leveling mix in layers. A good practical mix is screened topsoil blended with compost and, if your native soil is heavy clay, a modest amount of coarse sand. Do not use straight sand on clay soil unless you understand the soil profile; a sharp sand layer over dense clay can create a perched wet zone rather than improve drainage.

Spread no more than one-half inch at a time over existing grass. Work it down between blades with the back of a rake or a leveling lute. Let the grass grow through for two to three weeks, then repeat if needed.

For a raised hump: remove soil rather than crushing it

If a section is raised more than an inch and stays high after several weeks of thaw, cut the sod around the edge with a flat spade. Peel it back carefully, shave away the excess soil, loosen the exposed base lightly, and replace the sod. Water it in.

This is more work than running a roller over the hump, but it produces a lasting result. Heavy rolling tends to compress the soil below the hump while leaving the underlying drainage issue untouched.

A realistic repair example

One April, a roughly 6-by-10-foot patch beside a north-facing concrete driveway was sitting nearly two inches above the adjacent lawn. The grass was loose along the driveway edge, and the area stayed wet for days after rain. The homeowner’s first plan was to rent a heavy roller.

Instead, the sod was lifted on a Saturday after the soil had dried for four days. Beneath it was dense clay and a shallow layer of gravel left from driveway installation. About 1½ inches of soil was removed from the high side, the base was loosened with a garden fork, and a thin layer of screened topsoil was added before the sod went back. The repair took about two hours. By early June, the seam was barely visible. More importantly, a narrow swale was added to direct runoff away from the driveway edge, so the patch did not heave again the next winter.

Prevent the same spot from lifting next year

Repeated frost heave is usually a moisture-management problem. You cannot stop freezing weather, but you can reduce the amount of water held in the upper soil layer.

  • Extend downspouts so water is released well away from the lawn problem area.
  • Correct grading that directs driveway, patio, or roof runoff into the lawn.
  • Aerate compacted turf in early fall, not when spring soil is saturated.
  • Overseed thin areas in late summer or early fall so roots are established before winter.
  • Avoid heavy nitrogen fertilizer late in the season; soft, lush growth is less resilient going into winter.
  • Keep winter salt and snow piles away from turf edges where possible.

The mistake that causes the most repeat repairs

The common mistake is treating the visible bump as the entire problem. If the same strip heaves every winter, adding topsoil and seed each spring is cosmetic. Check where water is coming from, how long it stays there, and whether the soil is compacted beneath the turf.

For a one-time shallow bump, a little settling and a light topdress may be all the lawn needs. For recurring heave, spend your effort on drainage and soil structure. That is the difference between a lawn that looks smooth for a month and one that stays level through the next thaw.
