Start by checking whether it is really mold

Before reaching for bleach, look closely at the staining on the pergola. A wooden pergola lives outdoors, gets hit by rain, pollen, leaf debris, and morning dew, so not every dark patch is mold.

Mold usually looks fuzzy, dusty, or blotchy in black, dark green, gray, or white areas. It tends to appear on the shaded side of beams, under rafters, near climbing plants, and where two pieces of timber meet. Mildew is often flatter and more powdery, usually pale gray or white. Algae is greener and slicker when wet. Weathered wood, on the other hand, has a more even gray tone and will not wipe off onto a cloth.

A quick test is useful: dampen a small area, rub it with a nylon brush, and wipe it with a white rag. If black or green residue transfers to the rag and the surface smells musty, you are dealing with biological growth rather than ordinary weathering.

If the wood feels soft, flakes away under a screwdriver, or has deep black staining that remains after cleaning, the issue may be rot or moisture damage rather than surface mold. Cleaning will improve appearance, but it will not restore weakened timber.

Do the cleanup on a dry day, not right after rain

The best time to clean a wooden pergola is after a stretch of dry weather, ideally with no rain expected for 24 to 48 hours. Cleaning wet wood makes it harder to see what you have removed, and sealing damp timber afterward traps moisture where you do not want it.

Remove furniture, cushions, hanging lights, and potted plants first. Cut back vines or branches touching the pergola. This is more important than it sounds: dense foliage keeps the wood damp long after rain, and the mold will return quickly if the wood never gets sunlight or airflow.

Wear gloves, eye protection, and a mask if you are working overhead. Mold spores, cleaning spray, and loose debris have a habit of falling directly into your face when you scrub rafters.

A simple cleaning mix that is usually enough

For ordinary surface mold, I use an oxygen bleach cleaner rather than chlorine bleach. Mix the product according to its label, usually in a bucket of warm water. Oxygen bleach is effective on mold staining, less harsh on surrounding plants, and much less likely to strip or discolor wood unevenly.

If you want a basic household option for a small affected area, mix one cup of white vinegar with one gallon of water. This works well on light mildew, but it is not the best choice for a pergola with heavy black growth across several beams.

Do not mix vinegar with bleach, ammonia, or other cleaners. More products do not equal better cleaning; they can create dangerous fumes or damage the finish.

How to remove mold without roughing up the wood

Work in manageable sections, roughly one post or two to three rafter lengths at a time. Wet the wood lightly first, then apply your cleaning solution with a pump sprayer, sponge, or soft brush. Let it sit for about 10 to 15 minutes, keeping it damp but not allowing it to dry on the surface.

Scrub with a medium-stiff nylon brush, following the grain. Pay attention to bolt heads, end grain, beam joints, and the underside of horizontal boards. Those spots hold moisture and are usually where mold hangs on after the visible faces look clean.

Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose using a normal spray nozzle. A pressure washer can be useful, but it is also one of the easiest ways to damage a pergola. Too much pressure raises the grain, digs grooves into softwood, and pushes water into cracks and joints.

If you use a pressure washer, keep it gentle

  • Use a wide fan tip, not a pinpoint or turbo nozzle.
  • Keep pressure low, generally around 500 to 1,200 PSI for softwood.
  • Stand at least 18 inches from the timber.
  • Keep the wand moving and spray along the grain.
  • Test on a hidden lower section before touching visible beams.

I once cleaned a cedar pergola where the owner had used a 3,000 PSI washer at close range the previous weekend. The mold was gone, but every horizontal beam had pale etched stripes and fuzzy fibers. We had to let the structure dry for three days, sand the worst sections, and apply a semi-transparent stain to make the damage less obvious. A brush and oxygen bleach would have taken longer, but it would have saved a full afternoon of repair work.

When a stain remains after the mold is gone

It is normal for an older pergola to retain gray or black ghost marks after cleaning. Mold can stain the wood fibers, especially on untreated pine, spruce, and older cedar. If the surface is clean, dry, and no longer leaves residue on a rag, a remaining shadow is mostly cosmetic.

This does not always need fixing. On a weathered pergola, trying to chase every dark mark can lead to aggressive scrubbing, unnecessary sanding, and a patchy finish. If you plan to stain or seal the pergola, wait until it has dried fully and reassess it in daylight. Many mild stains become far less noticeable once the wood is evenly protected.

Use a wood brightener only when the color looks uneven

A wood brightener containing oxalic acid can help after cleaning if the timber has dark water marks, tannin stains, or uneven gray patches. Apply it after rinsing off the mold cleaner, follow the product instructions exactly, and rinse again. It is not a mold killer; its job is to improve the wood’s appearance before finishing.

The common mistake is applying stain over wood that still has active mold or is still wet from washing. The coating may look fine for a few weeks, then develop dark spots beneath it. Give the pergola at least 24 to 72 hours to dry, depending on humidity, shade, and timber thickness. If the wood feels cool or damp at joints in the morning, give it more time.

Keep the mold from coming back next season

The cleaning itself is straightforward. Preventing repeat growth is where most pergolas succeed or fail. Mold needs moisture, shade, and organic debris. Remove one or two of those conditions and the problem becomes much smaller.

A practical prevention checklist

  • Trim vines, hedges, and tree branches back at least 12 inches from the structure.
  • Clear leaves and seed pods from the top beams and rafter corners every few weeks in autumn.
  • Check that gutters, downspouts, and nearby sprinklers are not soaking one side of the pergola.
  • Keep pots and planters from sitting directly against posts.
  • Apply a breathable exterior wood sealer or stain once the timber is dry.
  • Inspect shaded north-facing sections at the start and end of each wet season.

A good exterior stain with mildewcide helps, but it is not a magic shield. The non-obvious part is airflow: a pergola covered tightly with climbing plants may look beautiful, yet the hidden rafters can stay damp for days. Selective pruning often does more for mold prevention than switching cleaning products.

Know when cleaning is no longer the right answer

Surface mold is a maintenance job. Structural decay is a repair job. If a post is soft near the base, fasteners are rusting out, wood has deep splits that hold water, or mold keeps returning within a month despite dry weather and cleaning, inspect the drainage and the timber condition more closely.

For a pergola attached to a house, persistent mold around ledger boards or wall connections deserves extra attention. Water may be getting behind the structure, and that is not something to hide with stain. Replace compromised wood and correct the moisture source first. A clean pergola should not just look better; it should dry quickly after rain and stay that way.
