How To Prevent Cabbage Moths From Laying Eggs

Stop the moth before you start chasing caterpillars

The frustrating part about cabbage moths is that the damage usually appears after the useful moment has passed. You walk out one morning, see small holes in kale leaves, turn one over, and find green caterpillars tucked along the midrib. By then, the white cabbage butterflies have already done their job.

If you want fewer cabbage worms, the main target is not the caterpillar. It is the adult moth or butterfly looking for a place to lay eggs. In most home gardens, that means preventing access to the plants rather than trying to make the plants smell unpleasant or spraying after damage begins.

The small white butterflies most gardeners notice are commonly called cabbage moths, although they are technically butterflies. They move through the garden in daylight, fluttering low over brassicas such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, collards, bok choy, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, and kale. A single female can leave eggs on several plants in one visit.

If you can see a white butterfly repeatedly circling your kale bed, assume eggs are being laid that day. Waiting for holes in the leaves is waiting too long.

What egg-laying activity actually looks like

Adult cabbage butterflies are not subtle once you know what to watch for. They tend to pause and dip down toward individual leaves rather than simply passing through the yard. They often inspect the outer leaves first, especially plants growing in sunny, open spots.

The eggs are tiny, pale yellow to cream-colored, and shaped like miniature upright footballs. They are usually laid singly on the underside of a leaf, though imported cabbageworm eggs can also appear on top. In warm weather, eggs can hatch in roughly four to eight days. That short window is why a weekly inspection can be enough in cool weather but too slow during a hot spell.

Normal leaf damage versus a problem that needs action

A few pinholes on the oldest outer leaves are not always worth panicking over. Healthy kale and collards can keep producing well despite light chewing, and a cabbage with one or two marked wrapper leaves can still form a perfectly good head.

It becomes a real problem when fresh holes appear in the newest leaves, dark green droppings collect in leaf folds, or caterpillars reach the growing point. On broccoli and cauliflower, caterpillars hidden in developing heads are especially worth preventing because nobody wants to discover one while washing dinner.

  • Probably not urgent: a few holes on lower leaves, no droppings, no caterpillars found after checking several plants.
  • Act now: fresh green droppings, small caterpillars under leaves, chewed centers, or butterflies visiting daily.
  • Too late for a casual approach: worms inside broccoli florets or under tight cabbage leaves.

Use physical exclusion before the first butterfly arrives

Row cover is the most reliable answer I have used. Not companion planting, not garlic spray, not crushed eggshells. A lightweight insect barrier placed over the bed before adults arrive can reduce egg-laying dramatically because the butterfly simply cannot land on the plant.

Use insect netting or a lightweight floating row cover supported by hoops. The important detail is sealing the edges. I have seen gardeners drape fabric beautifully over kale and then leave a two-inch gap along the soil line. A cabbage butterfly will find it. Weigh the edges down with boards, soil, bricks, sandbags, or landscape staples.

For cabbage, broccoli, and cauliflower, install the cover right after transplanting. For direct-seeded kale or bok choy, cover the bed once seedlings are established enough that the fabric will not rub them flat. Remove the cover only for harvesting, weeding, or inspection, then put it back immediately.

One detail that catches people out

Row cover only works if you did not trap the problem inside. If cabbage worms were present on the plants before covering, the caterpillars can mature, pupate, and emerge beneath the fabric. The next adults then lay eggs safely inside your protected bed.

Before covering, inspect both sides of every leaf. Remove eggs and caterpillars by hand, paying special attention to folded leaves and the center of the plant. This is tedious on a dozen plants but far less tedious than hand-picking worms every other day for a month.

A realistic garden-bed routine

Last July, I checked a six-plant kale bed after noticing two white butterflies hovering around it at about 9 a.m. The leaves looked nearly clean from a few steps away. Under close inspection, four plants had one or two eggs each, and one large kale leaf had three tiny caterpillars plus fresh droppings near the stem.

I removed the eggs with a fingernail, dropped the caterpillars into a jar of soapy water, and covered the bed with insect mesh that afternoon. For the next three weeks, I opened the netting twice a week to harvest leaves and inspect the plants. No new chewing showed up. The neighboring uncovered nasturtiums were full of cabbage white activity, which made the difference fairly obvious.

The practical lesson was not that hand-picking failed. It worked for the insects already there. The netting stopped the next wave.

When you cannot keep a cover on

There are times when covering every brassica is awkward. A large established kale patch, mixed ornamental beds, and plants growing through a trellis can make netting more trouble than it is worth. In that situation, regular inspection and biological treatment are the workable alternatives.

Check plants every three to four days during active butterfly season. Look underneath leaves first. Remove eggs before they hatch, and hand-pick any caterpillars you find. Small caterpillars are easy to miss because they match the leaf color; their droppings are often easier to spot than their bodies.

For larger infestations, use Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, usually sold as Bt or Btk. It targets caterpillars that eat treated leaves and is most effective on young worms. Spray late in the day, coat both leaf surfaces, and reapply according to the label after rain or rapid new growth. It will not kill eggs, and it will not stop butterflies from laying more.

Don’t rely on “repellent” tricks as your main defense

One common mistake is planting marigolds, nasturtiums, rosemary, or onions beside cabbage and assuming that arrangement prevents egg-laying. Diverse planting can make a garden healthier overall and may slightly complicate insect searching, but it does not create an invisible shield around brassicas. I have found cabbageworm eggs on kale growing right beside strongly scented herbs.

Nasturtiums can be useful as a sacrificial plant only if you are willing to inspect them too. They can attract cabbage butterflies, but they do not reliably pull every egg away from your crop.

A short prevention checklist

  • Watch for white butterflies as soon as brassicas go outside.
  • Inspect transplants before placing them under cover.
  • Use fine insect netting with fully sealed edges.
  • Check under leaves every three to four days if plants are uncovered.
  • Remove eggs before hatch and caterpillars before they reach heads or centers.
  • Use Bt on young caterpillars when hand-picking is no longer realistic.
  • Keep covers on until harvest unless pollination is needed; cabbage-family crops grown for leaves or heads do not need insect pollination.

The biggest shift is treating cabbage moth prevention as a timing problem. Protect plants while they are clean, inspect before damage becomes obvious, and do not waste energy trying to rescue heavily infested heads when a simple barrier would have prevented the issue in the first place.
