The first clue is usually a healthy-looking plant lying flat
Cutworm damage has a particular kind of frustration to it: you check a tray or garden bed in the evening, everything looks fine, and by breakfast a row of seedlings has been cut off at ground level. The leaves may still look green and perfectly healthy, but the stem is severed as if someone used tiny scissors.
That clean, low cut is the classic sign. Cutworms are moth larvae that feed mostly at night and hide in soil, mulch, clods, or debris during the day. They are especially fond of tender new transplants and direct-sown seedlings because the stems are soft and narrow enough to bite through quickly.
I have seen gardeners blame slugs, rabbits, wind, damping-off, and even birds before finding the real culprit curled up less than two inches from the plant. The difference matters, because the response for cutworms is completely different from the response for a fungal disease or a hungry rabbit.
What cutworm damage actually looks like
Start by looking at the base of the seedling, not the leaves. A cutworm typically attacks at or just below the soil surface. The stem may be fully severed, partly chewed, or bent over and hanging by a thin strip of tissue.
On small seedlings, especially brassicas, peppers, tomatoes, beans, corn, lettuce, and young flower starts, one larva can destroy several plants in a single night. The plant often falls over while still looking fresh. That is an important diagnostic detail: a seedling killed by root disease generally looks limp, darkened, or water-soaked before it collapses. A seedling cut by a worm may look like it was healthy five minutes ago.
Typical signs in the morning
- A seedling is lying on the soil with a stem cut near ground level.
- The top of the plant is missing, dragged slightly away, or left beside the stem.
- There is a shallow notch or rough chewing around the stem base.
- Nearby plants have partial stem damage, as though they were nicked but not completely cut.
- Small round droppings may be visible on the soil, though they are easy to miss.
- The damage is concentrated in one bed, one side of a row, or newly planted areas with loose soil or mulch.
Cutworms are usually gray, brown, greenish-brown, or almost black. Many have faint stripes or mottled markings. When disturbed, they often curl into a tight C-shape. That curling behavior is useful, but do not assume every curled grub is a cutworm; several harmless soil larvae do the same thing.
How to confirm the culprit instead of guessing
The most reliable test is the evening soil check. Go out about 30 minutes after dark with a flashlight and inspect the stems of damaged and neighboring seedlings. If cutworms are active, you may catch one feeding at the base of a plant. During the day, gently scrape back the top inch of soil in a circle around the damaged seedling. Check about two to four inches away from the stem as well.
In one spring vegetable bed, I found six broccoli seedlings flattened after a cool, damp night. The stems were cut almost exactly at soil level. At 9:30 that evening, nothing was visible on the plants, but when I loosened the soil around the two remaining broccoli starts, I found three fat, gray-brown larvae curled beneath a piece of old leaf mulch. Each was roughly an inch and a quarter long. Removing those larvae stopped the damage immediately; no spray was needed.
If a seedling is cleanly severed near the soil line and the plant still looks green, inspect for cutworms before treating for disease.
Cutworms versus look-alikes
Slugs usually leave irregular holes in leaves, scraped leaf surfaces, slime trails, and ragged feeding rather than a sharp stem cut. They can chew through stems, especially in wet conditions, but you will usually see slime or leaf damage nearby.
Damping-off causes the stem at soil level to become thin, pinched, brown, or mushy. The seedling collapses, but there is no missing section and no obvious bite mark. It often affects several crowded tray-grown seedlings rather than isolated plants in an outdoor bed.
Wind damage tends to bend or snap stems above the soil, especially after a storm. The break will look fibrous and torn, not chewed. Rabbits and larger animals leave broader bites, clipped leaves, tracks, or damage higher up the plant.
Birds can pull seedlings from loose soil, particularly corn and bean seedlings, but the plant is often uprooted rather than cut. If the root is still anchored and the stem is chewed through, look underground.
Damage that looks alarming but is not always worth fighting
A partially chewed seedling does not automatically need replacing. Tomato, pepper, broccoli, cabbage, and sturdy flower transplants can survive a shallow stem scrape if the stem remains firm and upright. I usually leave a plant alone if less than one-third of the stem circumference is damaged and the plant is still standing. Give it support, water normally, and protect it with a collar.
Likewise, finding one cutworm in a bed is not a crisis. A few larvae are part of garden life. The problem becomes worth active control when seedlings are being cut nightly, fresh damage is spreading along a row, or you are losing plants faster than they can establish.
The mistake that keeps cutworms coming back
The common mistake is treating the visible damage while leaving the hiding places untouched. People replace the seedlings, water them carefully, and perhaps scatter a product around the bed, but they leave thick weeds, crop residue, loose boards, dense mulch, or sod-like grass right next to the planting area. That gives larvae a protected daytime shelter and lets them move to the replacement plants at night.
Another mistake is putting a protective collar around the stem but pushing it only into the soil by a few millimeters. Cutworms can work beneath a shallow collar. The barrier needs to extend below the surface as well as above it.
What to do the same day you find damage
Protect the survivors first
Hand-picking is surprisingly effective in a small garden. Search after dark, then check soil around every damaged plant the following morning. Drop collected larvae into soapy water or crush them if you are comfortable doing so.
For vulnerable seedlings, use collars made from cardboard toilet-paper tubes, plastic drink cups with the bottom removed, or purpose-made plant collars. Set each collar about one inch into the soil and leave at least one inch above ground. Do not press the collar tightly against the stem; leave room for the plant to grow and for air to circulate.
A quick cutworm check before replacing seedlings
- Inspect the soil within four inches of each cut plant.
- Check under mulch, leaves, boards, and weeds.
- Look again after dark with a flashlight.
- Remove larvae before installing replacement plants.
- Add collars to replacements immediately.
- Keep mulch pulled back a few inches until seedlings have thicker stems.
If pressure is heavy across a large planting, a product containing Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki can help when larvae are actively feeding on exposed foliage, but it is less dependable for cutworms hiding below soil. Spinosad can also work when used according to the label, yet neither is as immediate as finding and removing the larvae around a small planting. For home beds, physical barriers and evening inspection are usually the best first move.
Why the damage often stops on its own
Cutworms are most destructive while plants are tiny. Once stems become tougher and wider, many seedlings are far less appealing and harder for a larva to sever. That is why a newly transplanted bed can look devastated for three nights and then suddenly stabilize. The goal is not to create a completely insect-free garden; it is to get seedlings through their most vulnerable stage.
When you know the signature—fresh green plant, stem cut at soil level, hidden larva nearby—you can act quickly. A flashlight, a trowel, a few collars, and ten minutes of inspection usually save more seedlings than a panicked round of spraying ever will.
