Uneven grass is often a tire problem before it is a blade problem
When a mower leaves one side of the lawn slightly taller, the usual instinct is to sharpen the blade or adjust the deck. Those are worth checking, but tire pressure is the faster place to start. A riding mower deck follows the angle of the mower frame. If one rear tire is low by only a few PSI, the whole deck can lean enough to leave a visible stripe of uncut grass.
I have seen this happen on a 42-inch lawn tractor where the owner kept raising and lowering the deck trying to cure a low strip on the right side. The deck was fine. The right rear tire was at 7 PSI and the left was at 13 PSI. After bringing both rear tires to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure, the next pass cut evenly without touching a deck adjustment bolt.
The important part is not simply inflating every tire to the same number. Front and rear tires commonly use different pressures, and the number printed on a tire sidewall is usually the maximum safe pressure, not the mower manufacturer’s preferred operating pressure.
Find the correct pressure before using the gauge
Look for a tire-pressure decal first. On riding mowers, it is often under the seat, on the fender, near the footrest, or inside the hood. Your owner’s manual will also list cold tire pressures. The front tires may call for 14 PSI while the rear tires call for 10 PSI, for example.
For walk-behind mowers with pneumatic wheels, the recommended pressure may be in the manual rather than on the machine. Many push mowers use low-pressure tires, and pumping them up hard makes the mower ride poorly and can reduce traction on slopes.
Check pressure when the tires are cold: ideally before mowing, after the mower has been sitting for a few hours. A tire checked immediately after hauling the mower in a hot trailer can read higher than its true working pressure.
If you cannot find a mower-specific recommendation, do not automatically use the sidewall maximum. Use the manual, dealer documentation, or the manufacturer’s support site. Overinflated turf tires are more likely to scalp high spots and leave deeper tracks in soft ground.
How to check each mower tire properly
A small pencil gauge works, but a dial or digital low-pressure gauge is easier to read accurately. Cheap automotive gauges can be surprisingly unreliable below 15 PSI, which is exactly where many mower tires operate.
Use this quick routine
- Park on level, firm ground and set the parking brake.
- Turn off the engine, remove the key, and let the machine cool if it has been running.
- Brush dirt and grass away from the valve stem cap.
- Remove the cap and press the gauge straight onto the valve stem until the hiss stops.
- Write down the reading for each tire instead of relying on memory.
- Add air in short bursts, then recheck. It is easier to add one PSI than to bleed off five.
- Replace the valve caps when finished; they keep grit out of the valve cores.
Check all four tires on a riding mower, even if the cut looks uneven only on one side. A low front tire can affect deck height, steering, and how the anti-scalp wheels contact the ground. A low rear tire has a bigger effect on the mower’s overall lean, especially on machines with wide decks.
What the lawn tells you about the tires
Tire-pressure trouble leaves a fairly recognizable pattern. You will usually notice it after mowing in one direction across relatively flat ground. One side of the cut sits consistently higher, or one blade path creates a narrow ridge between passes. The problem repeats even when your overlap is good.
A true blade problem looks different. A dull blade tears grass tips across the entire cut, leaving them pale or ragged a day later. A bent blade often creates an obvious repeating low spot or vibration. Tire pressure tends to create a steady side-to-side difference: the mower looks like it is cutting slightly downhill in one direction.
A five-minute identification list
- One side consistently cuts high: compare pressure on the left and right tires first.
- Scalped patches only on bumps: inspect tire pressure, deck height, and anti-scalp wheel settings.
- Mower pulls to one side: check front tire pressure and look for a dragging brake or damaged tire.
- Wavy cut across the full deck: inspect blades, spindles, and deck belt rather than blaming the tires.
- Freshly mowed stripes look uneven but grass height is actually equal: that is often normal grass lay, not a cutting issue.
The mistake that causes more problems than low pressure
The common mistake is filling every tire to the same high number because “they all looked low.” That approach can make a mower sit level on the driveway yet perform worse on grass. Rear turf tires are designed to spread the mower’s weight. Too much pressure rounds the tire profile, reduces the contact patch, and lets the mower bounce more over uneven ground.
Another mistake is judging pressure by squeezing the tire sidewall. Mower tires can look soft even at the correct pressure because their sidewalls are flexible. Conversely, a tire can look reasonably full and still be 4 PSI below target. Use a gauge; guessing is not close enough when you are trying to level a cutting deck.
When a pressure difference is not a repair emergency
If a tire loses less than 1 PSI over several weeks and the mower cuts evenly, there is no urgent repair needed. Temperature changes alone can move readings a bit. A cold morning in spring can show a lower reading than an afternoon in July without there being a leak.
Likewise, slight cosmetic cracking on an older turf tire does not automatically mean replacement. If the cracks are shallow, the tire holds pressure, and there is no bulge, exposed cord, or cut near the bead, keep monitoring it. Replace it when the damage affects safety or pressure retention, not merely because the rubber looks aged.
A tire that drops from 10 PSI to 6 PSI overnight is different. Check the valve core first; a loose core is a cheap fix. Then inspect the tread for thorns, screws, and small punctures. Spray soapy water around the valve stem, bead, and suspicious spots. Growing bubbles identify the leak.
Make tire pressure part of the mowing setup
For an evenly cut lawn, check tire pressure every three to four mowing sessions, and always after the mower has sat through winter, been transported, or struck a curb or stump. On a mower used weekly, that means a quick check roughly once a month.
Once the tires are set correctly, park on level ground and measure the deck from each blade tip to the surface. Only then should you adjust deck links or leveling hardware. Leveling a deck while one tire is low is a frustrating way to create a second problem.
The practical order is simple: correct tire pressure, inspect blades, confirm deck level, then mow a short test strip. It takes less than ten minutes, and it solves a surprising number of “bad deck” complaints before they become an afternoon of unnecessary adjustments.
