Potted worms, also known as white maggots, are small wingless insects that are often found in houseplants. They are usually about a half-inch long and have a brown or black body with a white head. These pests feed on the roots of plants, which can cause them to wilt and die. Pot worms will cause the plant to gradually wilt and die as they drink all the important life juices from it.

Not all pot worms are equally harmful

If you notice crawling worms in your pot, these little creatures are helping your soil. They loosen it up, thereby promoting better aeration of the soil, which is especially important for flowers or plants that need increased ventilation of the roots.

Red worms are also very helpful. They leave behind valuable organic waste, which is a natural fertilizer for the soil, and they also help to discourage insects that might want to eat your plant.

Why do plants have worms in their pots?

There are several reasons why your houseplants may have worms:

  • The most common reason is that the potting mix you use is infested with them. This happens if you take soil from your garden, vegetable garden or lawn. And if the soil is untreated and pets often walk on it, an infestation is inevitable;
  • In the second case, you can bring a potworm on a purchased plant from the store. You may not notice the potworm larvae on the roots at all, so when you plant the plant in a pea, adults will appear after a while;
  • A soil environment that is too moist becomes an ideal breeding ground for pot worms, which can be brought there by fungal mosquitoes;
  • If the soil has a low pH level, this can also be a good place for potato worms;
  • Organic fertilizer from your own garden or vegetable garden. In that case, you can bring pot worm eggs or already hatched specimens along with it.

Pesticides

There are products that kill potworms, but they can also harm your plants, so it is important to buy a selective pesticide, that is, one that works gently and safely. That way, it won’t harm your plant, but it will kill the worm. Pesticides are best used to kill pot worms on those plants that are potted outside but not indoors.

Insecticide

This method is one of the most effective methods of getting rid of potworms. However, make sure you use a product specifically designed to kill potworms and not harm your plants. The packaging of such products indicates what types of plants and what they can be used for. The safest ones are the organic types.

But remember, there are also very aggressive ones with a complex chain of chemicals added. Such insecticides are used in large areas when the infestation is too great and there is no other way out.

A very unusual and quite original way to get rid of potworms. These are beneficial nematodes. They are tiny parasitic worms that kill potworms by penetrating their bodies. But at the same time they do not kill the plant.

Oil of Nima

Neem oil is an effective remedy for worms. It is made from the leaves of the neem tree and has a very strong odor. This oil is poisonous to pot worms and kills them within 24 hours, but at the same time is not harmful to the plant, people and animals. Neem oil is also effective in controlling powdery mildew and fungal infections of the plant. To use Neem oil, mix three drops of oil with one cup of water. Then apply this mixture to the affected area.

Soap solution and vegetable oil

This can be an effective remedy for getting rid of worms. Mix one tablespoon of soap with one cup of water and add a few drops of vegetable oil. You can spray affected plants with this solution. The solution penetrates the soil and envelopes the bodies of the potworms. This blocks air access and they die.

Soil replacement

Soil replacement is the most common method of getting rid of potworms and one of the easiest. This involves removing all of the infested soil from the potted plants and replacing it with a fresh, sterile soil mixture. In doing so, you must be careful not to damage the roots of the plants. If you have any doubts, it is best to consult a professional.

When transplanting the plant into new, clean soil, be sure to inspect the roots of your plant to make sure there are no pot worm eggs left on them. It’s also worth spraying it with Neem oil to disinfect it.

You can make garlic water by crushing garlic cloves and mixing them with water. Allow the mixture to infuse for several hours and then spray the plants with it. This method can help get rid of pot worms that already exist, or as a preventative measure.

Are pot worms dangerous to humans and animals?

Potted worms are a nuisance because they can multiply quickly and become pests in the home. Potworms cannot bite humans or pets, but they can be carriers of intestinal infections and Cymonella.
