No one likes stickers in the yard. They take away from the beauty of your property and can be a safety hazard for children or pets. Fortunately, there are many ways to get rid of these pesky stickers without spending tons of money on chemicals that may not work! In this blog post, we’ll discuss how you can remove those pesky stickers from your lawn so that it looks beautiful again.
What are stickers in your yard?
Stickers are a special kind of weed that has its own variety. It is a small plant that grows tangled in the grass. It has small or long spines that can damage human or animal skin. Stickers are not toxic, but they significantly degrade the lawn and also cause physical harm to humans or animals.
Such stickers are very easy to step on and injure. Stickers grow profusely and in groups, so they are easy to spot.
What types of stickers are available?
Stickers refer to weeds in any case, but they are also divided into their own species:
- Sand burrs;
- Burr stickers;
- Monster picks;
- Weed stickers;
- Weed stickers.
Despite the differences, similar stickers look pretty much the same. They are of the same kind, so they bring the same problems.
Ways to get rid of stickers
The most affordable way to get rid of the stickers is to collect them by hand. To do this, wear special thick gardening gloves that can protect your hands from thorns. Take a heavy bag and begin to collect the stickers step by step. First clean one piece of lawn, then move on to another.
This method will require a lot of time and effort on your part. It will all depend on the area of your lawn. The larger it is, the more work you will have to do. It also depends on how infested your yard is.
Using a rake
A rake is an excellent tool for removing thorns from the lawn. They are also effective against other types of weeds. You can buy or borrow them from friends or neighbors. When using a rake, be very careful not to hurt yourself on its sharp teeth. If you don’t know how to use them, practice on the property.
Start at the far end of the yard and gradually work your way in. This will allow you to have proper control over the area you are tilling. After you finish cleaning, collect the piles of stickers and stack them separately behind the yard, for trash removal.
With a lawn mower
A lawn mower is the quickest and easiest way to remove stickers from your yard. However, it only works if the stickers are not buried too deep in the ground. If that’s the case, you’ll have to use one of the other methods mentioned above.
First, you’ll need to clear part of the yard with a rake, and then twist the heavy cardboard into a tight roller. The roll should be wrapped with adhesive paper, or a special adhesive cloth. Attach the roller to the bottom attachment of the lawnmower and begin to drive around the yard collecting stickers on the sticky surface.
Short cutting of the lawn
This method is similar to the one described above, but it is a little more complicated. You will need sharp scissors or pruning shears, which you can buy at any gardening store for about $15-$20, depending on how big your yard is. First, cut off all the stickers with the scissors and then, using gloves, assemble them.
You can also use a lawn mower, where you need to trim the lawn very short. Mow the lawn at intervals of once every three days. Mow the lawn this way for the next two weeks.
MSMA is a herbicide that can be applied to your lawn with a spray bottle. It will kill all the thorns in the area, but it can also harm your grass. If you decide to use this method, test it on a small area of your lawn first to make sure it won’t have a negative effect.
The best time to use this method is in June or August. Be careful to keep pets and children off the lawn during MSMA treatments. If you want to keep the grass on your lawn in order, treat the stickers spot-on.
Pre-emergent means “before you start. It is a pesticide that prevents the growth of weeds. It should be applied in March or April before the thorns have grown to several centimeters in height. It is very important not to use other types of herbicides when applying pre-emergent because they can kill your grass that has already grown.
The method with preemergence killers, helps to kill the stickers in the seeds, but at the same time keep all your other greens in your yard unchanged.
Fertilizing your lawn is one of the best ways to keep it healthy and free from stickers. It will also help to get rid of any other types of weeds. You can use a standard fertilizer or a weed-and-feed product. Both are available at most gardening stores.
White vinegar is a natural herbicide that can be used to kill thorns. It is also non-toxic and biodegradable. Pour undiluted white vinegar directly onto the stickers. You may have to repeat this process several times, depending on the degree of infestation. Repeat until the stickers are dead. But it’s worth remembering that white vinegar contains a lot of acidic elements and it can also damage other grasses that grow nearby. Be careful when treating in such a case.
Regular mowing of grass
Regular mowing is the best way to prevent thorns from spreading. However, it only helps if you get rid of them regularly and don’t allow them to grow into bushes that spread uncontrollably around your yard. If you can maintain regular mowing, it won’t be easy for stickers to grow on a lawn that is too short. This is a good method that will allow you to avoid using chemicals or making life difficult by hand picking weeds.
