The quickest way to break a sprinkler head is to mow when you cannot see it
Most damaged sprinkler heads are not caused by a mower blade hitting the plastic cap. They are caused by a wheel dropping onto a head, a scalp-cut lawn exposing the body, or a trimmer chewing up the riser at ground level. Once a head sits low, leans, or loses its protective soil around the base, the next mowing pass tends to finish the job.
I learned this on a lawn with pop-up spray heads set along a narrow sidewalk strip. The grass had grown fast after a week of rain, and several heads were hidden. A mower wheel rode over one near the driveway at full speed. The head did not visibly snap, so it was easy to miss. That evening, zone three came on and sent a thin jet of water sideways into the garage door. The $4 nozzle was fine; the underground fitting below it had cracked. The repair took over an hour because the head had to be dug out, reconnected, leveled, and tested.
The goal is not to treat every sprinkler head like fragile glass. Properly installed heads can handle normal lawn traffic. The trick is knowing which heads are safely below the mowing line and which ones have become a hazard.
Start by finding the heads before the mower starts
If you know the irrigation layout, mowing around heads becomes routine. If you are maintaining a new property, do not assume every head is where it ought to be. Soil settles, edging shifts, and previous repairs often leave one or two heads sitting too high.
Run each irrigation zone before the first mow of the season and again after any landscaping work. Watching the system operate tells you far more than walking the lawn looking for caps. You will spot heads that do not pop up fully, heads tilted toward a wall, and nozzles covered by turf.
What a healthy mower-safe head looks like
With the irrigation off, the top of a standard pop-up head should sit roughly flush with the surrounding soil. The cap may be just visible through the grass, but it should not stand proud of the lawn. A mower wheel can pass over grass above it without putting direct pressure on the cap.
A head needs attention when it is noticeably above grade, wobbles when pressed lightly, or has a bare dirt ring around it from repeated wheel contact. A low head is not automatically a problem either. If it rises normally, clears the grass, and sprays correctly, leave it alone. Digging up a working head merely because it sits a quarter inch low often creates more trouble than it solves.
Use simple markers when the grass is tall
Bright irrigation flags are useful, but they are not the only option. Small bamboo skewers with fluorescent tape work well for a one-time mow, especially in tall grass. Put the marker a few inches beside the head, not through the cap or directly into the body. Remove markers afterward; leaving them in place is an invitation for a mower wheel, a dog, or a child to bend them into the sprinkler.
- Mark heads hidden by tall grass or weeds.
- Mark heads beside hard edging, driveways, and fence lines.
- Flag any head that is raised, loose, or tilted until it is repaired.
- Make a note of heads near trees, since roots can lift them over time.
Mow the open lawn first, then handle the risky edges deliberately
On broad turf, mow normally with the deck set high enough that you are not scalping the ground. A sensible height for many cool-season lawns is around 3 to 3.5 inches; warm-season turf varies, but the principle is the same: do not cut so low that every sprinkler cap becomes exposed.
Slow down as you approach marked heads. Keep mower wheels from tracking directly over a raised cap, and avoid tight zero-turn pivots nearby. A zero-turn mower can be especially rough because the drive wheel can scrub the turf while turning. That twisting force loosens soil around a head and can shear a riser that was already leaning.
If a sprinkler head is high enough for a mower blade to touch it, do not try to “mow carefully” around it forever. Lower and level it. The mower is not the real problem; the installation height is.
Do not use the string trimmer like a finishing tool everywhere
The most common mistake is running a trimmer directly around every head to create a neat, shaved circle. It looks tidy for about a day. Then the plastic cap gets scarred, the riser becomes exposed, and soil washes away around the fitting. On rotary heads, trimmer line can also damage the rubber seal or knock the nozzle out of alignment.
Instead, hold the trimmer head nearly level and use a light pass to remove grass leaning over the cap. Leave a little grass around the sprinkler. It protects the soil and does not interfere with spray performance as long as the head pops up above the blades of grass.
When a sprinkler is close to pavement, mowing is not the hard part
Heads beside sidewalks and curbs are frequently damaged by edging, not mowing. Metal blade edgers can catch the cap, and string trimmers often shave the turf down to soil along concrete. That creates a depression where the head gradually sinks and collects debris.
Keep a narrow grass buffer around the head rather than trying to cut a perfect concrete-clean line through it. If the head is installed less than a couple of inches from pavement, consider relocating it during the next irrigation repair. That small adjustment makes routine maintenance easier for years.
A quick check after mowing catches the expensive failures
You do not need to run every zone after every weekly mow. But take two minutes to walk the areas where you turned tightly, trimmed heavily, or found a raised head. Look for a cap sitting crooked, fresh wet soil, a head pushed below grade, or a broken nozzle tip.

- Probably normal: cap flush with soil, grass lightly covering it, head pops up and sprays evenly.
- Needs monitoring: cap is slightly low but the spray clears the grass and reaches its intended area.
- Fix soon: head rocks in the ground, sits above the turf, sprays sideways, or is repeatedly struck by equipment.
- Stop mowing over it: cracked cap, broken riser, water bubbling from the base, or a nozzle missing after trimming.
The small habit that prevents repeat damage
Keep an irrigation map, even if it is only a phone photo of the yard with heads marked on it. After repairing a head, note why it failed: raised by roots, too close to edging, buried by soil, or hit during mowing. Patterns show up quickly. If three heads along one bed edge keep breaking, the solution is rarely “be more careful.” The layout or grade needs changing.
For ordinary mowing, the practical routine is simple: locate the heads, keep the deck from scalping, avoid sharp turns over them, trim gently, and repair raised or loose heads instead of working around them indefinitely. That is less fussy than it sounds, and it beats discovering a broken fitting only after the water bill arrives.
