Those “mounds” are usually castings, not a lawn disease

If you walk across the lawn on a damp morning and find dozens of small, muddy piles scattered through the grass, you are usually looking at nightcrawler castings. Nightcrawlers feed below ground, then push processed soil to the surface near the entrance to their burrow. The result looks like a tiny volcano or a pile of wet coffee grounds.

The annoying part is not usually the worms themselves. It is what their castings do when they are wet: they smear under shoes, clog mower wheels, flatten grass, and leave a bumpy surface after repeated traffic. On a closely mown lawn, especially turf kept around 2 to 2.5 inches, the piles stand out far more than they do in a taller lawn.

Nightcrawlers are generally helpful. Their burrows improve water movement and root access to air, and they break down thatch and organic debris. Trying to eliminate them entirely is usually expensive, temporary, and hard on the rest of the soil life. The practical goal is to make the castings less visible and less disruptive.

A lawn with nightcrawler activity is often biologically active. The trick is managing the surface mess without wrecking the soil that supports the grass.

First, make sure you are dealing with nightcrawler castings

People often call any bump in a lawn a worm mound. That leads to the wrong fix.

  • Nightcrawler castings: small piles of loose soil, often 1 to 3 inches across, with a visible hole or shallow depression near the center. They appear most heavily after rain, irrigation, or a humid night.
  • Mole activity: raised tunnels that run in lines under the turf, plus larger volcano-shaped soil piles. Moles may eat worms, but worm castings do not mean you have a mole problem.
  • Ant nests: dry, granular piles, often with an obvious opening and much more activity on warm, dry days.
  • Poor leveling: broad low and high areas that remain even when the soil surface is dry. Worms can exaggerate an uneven lawn, but they did not necessarily create the original grade problem.

A quick test is to check early in the morning after a wet night. If the piles are soft, dark, and disappear when brushed across the grass, they are almost certainly castings.

The fastest way to make castings less noticeable

Timing matters more than buying a special product. Do not mow over wet castings if you can avoid it. A mower deck turns them into mud pellets that stick to the wheels and get pressed into the grass. That is when an otherwise healthy lawn starts looking patchy.

Wait until the surface dries, then brush lightly

When the castings have dried enough to crumble, use a stiff push broom, lawn brush, drag mat, or the back of a rake to disperse them. Work gently. The goal is to break the piles apart, not tear out grass crowns.

For a small lawn, a broom is usually enough. On a larger area, a lightweight chain-link drag or leveling lute pulled by hand works well after the lawn is dry. I would not use a heavy lawn roller for this job. Rolling compresses soil and can make drainage worse, which encourages more worm activity near the surface.

Raise the mowing height a little

One of the simplest fixes is also the least appreciated: keep more leaf blade above the soil. Raising the mower from 2 inches to 3 inches can make a surprising difference because the grass hides small castings and recovers better after they are brushed apart.

This is especially useful for cool-season lawns in spring and fall, when nightcrawler activity is high. A slightly taller lawn also shades the soil, reducing the dramatic wet-dry swings that bring worms upward.

The mistake that makes the problem worse: constant light watering

Frequent shallow irrigation creates the exact surface conditions that make castings obvious. It keeps the top inch of soil damp, encourages worms to work close to the surface, and leaves castings wet for longer.

A homeowner I helped had a roughly 1,800-square-foot backyard lawn that looked like it had been peppered with mud piles every morning in October. He was running sprinklers for 12 minutes every day because a few sunny strips looked dry. The lawn was not actually drought-stressed; the shallow roots were being trained to depend on daily water. We changed the schedule to a deeper watering twice per week, about 35 to 45 minutes per zone depending on sprinkler output, and skipped irrigation after rain. Within three weeks, the number of visibly wet castings dropped sharply. The worms did not disappear, but the lawn stopped looking muddy before every weekend mow.

Deep, less frequent watering is not a cure for nightcrawlers. It is a way to avoid maintaining a permanently damp surface.

Use this quick irrigation check

  • Push a screwdriver or soil probe into the lawn the day after watering.
  • If moisture reaches 4 to 6 inches down, you have watered deeply enough for established turf.
  • If only the top inch is wet, increase run time rather than watering every day.
  • If the lawn stays soggy for more than a day, investigate drainage before changing anything else.

Reduce the food source near the surface

Nightcrawlers are attracted to organic material. That does not mean you should strip your soil of all organic matter; that would be counterproductive. It does mean you should avoid creating a thick, constantly moist buffet at ground level.

Heavy thatch, thick layers of fallen leaves, repeated applications of manure-based compost, and overfeeding with organic fertilizers can all increase surface worm activity. Mulching a normal amount of leaves into the lawn is fine. Leaving a dense, wet layer of whole leaves for weeks is not.

Use a bagger or leaf rake when the leaf layer is thick enough to mat down. If you topdress, keep it modest: around one-quarter inch of screened compost is plenty for most lawns. A yearly half-inch blanket of rich compost may sound wholesome, but on a lawn already full of worms it can turn into more casting activity than you want.

When the mounds point to a drainage issue

Castings are most troublesome where water lingers. Look for areas near downspouts, low spots beside patios, the bottom of slopes, and places where sprinkler heads overlap. In these spots, the issue is often not “too many worms.” It is that the soil surface stays wet too long.

If one corner produces nearly all the mounds, watch it after a normal rain. Water sitting there for more than 12 to 24 hours deserves attention. Extend a downspout, adjust irrigation coverage, fill shallow depressions during active grass growth, or improve the grade if runoff drains toward the lawn.

A thin topdressing of sand can help level a lawn, but do not dump sand onto heavy clay without a plan. Mixing a little sand into clay rarely creates better soil; it can create a dense, concrete-like layer. For small leveling work, a screened soil-compost blend is safer unless you know your soil profile and are following a proper sand-based turf program.

What not to do

There are products marketed to drive worms away, and people occasionally reach for pesticides, lime, salt, or household chemicals. That is a bad trade. Many treatments either do little for nightcrawlers or harm beneficial soil organisms, grass roots, pets, and nearby water. Salt is particularly destructive and can leave bare patches that take months to recover.

Also avoid applying lime just because you have worms. Worms do not automatically mean soil is too acidic. Lime should be based on a soil test, not on casting piles.

When you can leave the lawn alone

If the castings are limited to a few weeks in spring or fall, crumble easily once dry, and are not making the lawn uneven, there is no real problem to fix. A lawn can have plenty of nightcrawlers and still be healthy, level, and easy to mow.

My practical threshold is simple: take action when castings regularly interfere with mowing, make turf muddy underfoot, or concentrate in wet areas that suggest drainage trouble. Otherwise, mow a little higher, brush the lawn after it dries, and let the worms do the underground work most lawns benefit from.
