Start by deciding whether the patio is actually suitable
Securing a pergola to concrete sounds straightforward until you discover that not all patios are built to hold structural anchors. A thin decorative slab, a cracked extension, or a patio laid over compacted gravel can all cause trouble long after the pergola looks finished.
The first thing I check is slab thickness. For a typical freestanding wood or aluminum pergola, I want at least 4 inches of sound concrete under each post base. Five or 6 inches is better, especially for a larger structure with a roof, retractable shade, or climbing vines that catch wind.
Look closely at the surface before buying anchors. Hairline shrinkage cracks are usually not a deal breaker. A crack that has one side sitting higher than the other, runs through a post location, or has widened enough to collect debris is different. Do not place an anchor close to the edge of a slab either. Concrete can break out around the bolt under wind load.
A pergola is not held down by its weight. It is held down by the anchors when wind tries to lift, rack, and twist it.
A practical rule is to keep anchor holes at least 4 inches from a slab edge, though larger anchors and heavier pergolas need more room. If your planned post location is too close to the edge, move the pergola inward, pour proper concrete footings at the corners, or use a different installation plan.
Choose the post base before drilling anything
The post base is the connection between the pergola leg and the patio. It should be metal, rated for outdoor use, and sized for your lumber or pergola system. For a 4×4 wood post, use a 4×4 post base; for 6×6 posts, use a base designed for actual 6×6 dimensional lumber.
A common mistake is setting wood directly on the patio and driving screws through a simple flat bracket. It may look solid on day one, but the bottom of the post stays damp after rain, dirt builds up around it, and rot begins where you cannot see it. A proper standoff base leaves a small gap between the wood and concrete, allowing drainage and airflow.
Anchor types that work well

Wedge anchors: Strong and dependable for sound, thick concrete. They are a good choice for heavy wood pergolas and permanent installations.

Concrete screw anchors: Easier to remove and useful for lighter pergolas or smaller post bases. Use the diameter and embedment depth specified by the manufacturer.

Epoxy-set threaded rod: Useful when designing a custom connection or working around an unusual base plate. This is more involved and requires clean, correctly drilled holes.
For most backyard builds, galvanized or stainless wedge anchors paired with galvanized post bases are the sensible choice. In coastal areas or around saltwater pools, stainless hardware is worth the extra money. Mixed metals can corrode each other, so avoid pairing bare steel fasteners with aluminum hardware.
Lay it out twice, then drill once
Concrete drilling is the point where a small layout error becomes permanent. Assemble the pergola frame loosely first if possible, or mark every post position using the manufacturer’s footprint dimensions. Measure diagonally between opposite corners. If both diagonal measurements match, the layout is square.
Here is a real-world example: a homeowner was installing a 10-by-12-foot cedar pergola on a patio behind a garage. The outside measurements looked correct, but one corner was 1 1/4 inches out of square. Once the headers were lifted into place, the final post would not line up with its base. They had to abandon two freshly drilled anchor holes and shift the entire frame. Ten extra minutes spent checking diagonals would have prevented a long afternoon of patching concrete.
Set each post base in position and mark hole centers with a marker, masonry pencil, or center punch. Remove the base before drilling. Do not try to drill through the bracket holes unless you have excellent control; the bit can wander, damage the bracket coating, and leave a hole slightly off center.

Drill clean holes and set the anchors properly
Use a masonry bit that exactly matches the anchor instructions. This matters more than people expect. A hole that is too large prevents a wedge anchor from gripping correctly; a hole that is too shallow keeps the nut from seating and encourages people to overtighten.
Mark the required drilling depth on the bit with tape. Drill straight down, not at an angle. Vacuum out the dust, then vacuum again. Dust left in the hole is especially bad for adhesive anchors, but it can also interfere with mechanical anchors seating fully.
With wedge anchors, place the base over the holes, insert the anchors, tap them gently until seated, then tighten the nuts evenly. Do not crank one anchor fully tight before starting the others. Check that the base remains flat against the concrete and that it has not twisted as the anchors tightened.
Do not overtighten. Concrete does not behave like wood. Excess torque can crack the slab around an anchor or strip a concrete screw. Follow the torque value supplied for that specific anchor size.
Secure the frame so it cannot rack sideways
Anchoring the four feet is only half the job. A pergola can be firmly attached to a patio and still sway because the frame has no diagonal bracing. This is especially noticeable on tall 8-foot posts with open sides.
Once the posts are in their bases, plumb each one with a level and temporarily brace it using 2x4s. Install the beams and headers, then add knee braces at the upper corners if the design allows. Steel corner brackets can help, but wood knee braces usually make a bigger difference on a traditional timber pergola.
If you are installing a pergola against a house, do not assume the patio anchors are enough. The ledger or wall connection must be attached to structural framing, not just siding, trim, brick veneer, or stucco. That part is worth treating as a separate structural task.
When a loose-looking gap is actually normal
A small gap between the wood post and the concrete is not a problem. It is usually intentional. Quality post bases hold the post slightly above the slab so water does not wick into end grain. Do not fill that gap with caulk, mortar, expanding foam, or mulch.
Likewise, a pergola may make a faint creak during the first hot afternoon after installation. Wood expands and dries, fasteners settle, and metal brackets can shift slightly under load. If the posts remain plumb, the anchors are tight, and the frame does not visibly move when pushed, that noise alone does not require a repair.
A quick final check before calling it finished

After the first heavy wind or rainstorm, inspect the bases again. Watch for widening cracks, rust stains, loose nuts, or a post that has started leaning. Catching a minor issue early is easy. Waiting until a loaded pergola shifts on a windy day is when a simple patio project turns expensive.
