Start by figuring out what kind of “sticking” you have

A dresser drawer can feel stuck for several different reasons, and the fix depends on what your hands actually feel when you pull it. A drawer that drags steadily from the first inch to the last is usually rubbing somewhere. A drawer that comes out halfway and then stops may be hitting a warped rail, a loose screw, or something that has fallen behind it. A drawer that opens fine when empty but jams once full is often dealing with weight, a weak bottom panel, or slides that are no longer sitting level.

Don’t start by spraying lubricant everywhere. That is the most common mistake, and it can turn a simple rubbing issue into a dusty, greasy mess that gets worse over time.

Pull the drawer out completely, if possible, and look at the tracks, runners, and sides before doing anything else. On an older wooden dresser, you will usually see wood runners beneath or along the sides of the drawer. On newer furniture, there may be metal side slides, bottom-mounted slides, or plastic roller tracks.

If a drawer suddenly starts sticking after years of working normally, assume something moved, loosened, swelled, or fell into the opening before assuming it needs lubrication.

The quick check that saves the most time

Empty the drawer and test it again. This sounds obvious, but overfilled drawers are responsible for a surprising number of “broken” dressers. Heavy stacks of jeans, books, or thick sweaters can bow a thin drawer bottom just enough to scrape the frame below it.

Then inspect the drawer opening with a flashlight. Look for a sock, paper tag, loose coin, broken plastic stop, or a screw that has backed out. Small items often slip behind the drawer and lodge against the rear rail. You may not see the object from the front, but you will usually notice that the drawer stops at exactly the same point every time.

A fast identification list

  • Drawer sticks only when fully loaded: check for a bowed bottom or overloaded slides.

  • Drawer stops abruptly at one exact point: look for an obstruction, loose screw, or damaged stop.

  • Drawer feels rough and tight throughout its travel: inspect for wood swelling, grime, or rubbing rails.

  • One side moves while the other side hangs back: check slide alignment and mounting screws.

  • Drawer works better on dry days than humid days: the wood has likely swollen.

For wooden drawers, friction is usually the real enemy

Older dressers often use simple wood-on-wood runners. They are durable and easy to repair, but humidity can make them stubborn. Wood absorbs moisture, especially in bedrooms without air conditioning, basements, or homes with seasonal weather changes. The drawer sides expand slightly, and suddenly a drawer that was fine in January needs two hands to open in July.

First, clean the contact surfaces. Wipe the drawer runners and the matching tracks inside the dresser with a dry cloth, then use a lightly damp cloth for sticky residue. Let everything dry completely. Old furniture polish, dust, pet hair, and waxy buildup create more drag than most people expect.

Use the right lubricant for wood

For wood runners, plain paraffin wax is one of the best fixes. A cheap unscented candle works, although a block of paraffin is cleaner and easier to control. Rub it along the bottom edges of the drawer, the side contact points, and the wooden runners inside the dresser. You do not need a thick coating; a light wax film is enough.

Beeswax also works, but it can feel slightly tackier in warm rooms. Silicone spray can help, though I avoid it on unfinished wood because overspray travels farther than expected and can interfere with refinishing later. Avoid cooking oil, petroleum jelly, and WD-40. They attract dust, can stain surrounding wood, and make the problem return faster.

After waxing, slide the drawer in and out 10 to 15 times. The movement spreads the wax over the contact surfaces. A drawer that was dragging should feel noticeably smoother almost immediately.

When sanding is justified, and when it is not

If waxing makes little difference, find the exact rubbing point. Look for shiny burnished wood, fresh scrape marks, or finish worn away along one edge. Those marks tell you where the drawer is binding.

Use 120- or 150-grit sandpaper and remove a very small amount of material from the rubbing area. Work slowly. A few passes are often enough. Then vacuum the dust, test the drawer, and repeat only if needed. It is easy to get impatient and sand too much, leaving a drawer that rattles or sits crooked in dry weather.

A realistic example: an oak dresser drawer in a second-floor bedroom began sticking every June. It took a firm pull to open, but only for the first three inches. After removing the drawer, the left upper edge showed a narrow polished strip where it rubbed the face frame. Two light sanding passes, followed by paraffin on both runners, fixed it. The drawer still felt slightly snug during humid weeks, but it opened with one hand. That slight seasonal change was normal; removing more wood would have created a loose fit in winter.

Metal slides need alignment more often than lubricant

On modern dressers, metal drawer slides usually stick because a screw has loosened, the slide has bent, or the drawer has been overloaded. Remove the drawer and compare the left and right slides. They should sit at the same height, run parallel, and feel secure when you press on them.

Tighten every mounting screw you can reach. If a screw spins without tightening, the particleboard hole may be stripped. In that case, move to a slightly larger screw if the slide hole allows it, or repair the hole with wood glue and toothpicks before reinstalling the screw. Let the glue dry fully before putting weight back in the drawer.

Check the drawer bottom before blaming the slides

Many flat-pack dressers use thin hardboard bottoms set into grooves. When a drawer is overloaded, the bottom bows downward and catches on the center rail or lower edge of the cabinet. You will notice the drawer glides well empty but drags badly with clothes inside.

Take the drawer out and lay a straightedge across the bottom. If the center hangs lower than the edges, reduce the load first. Reinforcing the bottom with a thin plywood panel or a properly fitted support strip can help, but it is not worth doing if the dresser itself is lightweight and the drawer is being used for heavy tools, stacks of files, or dense books. That drawer needs less weight, not a heroic repair.

What does not need fixing

A drawer that has a little resistance near the end of its travel may be working exactly as designed. Many drawers have stops that prevent accidental removal, and ball-bearing slides can feel firmer during the last inch as they settle into the closed position. If the drawer opens and closes smoothly with normal hand pressure, stays level, and does not scrape or jump, leave it alone.

Likewise, a solid wood drawer that feels slightly tighter during a humid spell is not necessarily damaged. Wax it if the drag is annoying, keep the room reasonably dry, and avoid aggressive sanding unless there are clear rub marks.

A practical routine that keeps drawers sliding

  • Empty and vacuum drawers once or twice a year, especially bedroom drawers that collect lint.

  • Keep heavy items in lower drawers, where the slides and frame handle weight better.

  • Check slide screws after moving a dresser; transport vibration loosens them.

  • Use paraffin wax on wood runners rather than oily household products.

  • Stop forcing a drawer as soon as it binds abruptly. Pulling harder can bend slides or crack a wooden runner.

The best repair is usually small: remove the obstruction, tighten the hardware, clean the tracks, or add a little wax. Once you identify where the friction comes from, dresser drawers are far less mysterious than they first seem.
