Short version: vinegar can help kill very small plants and may damage exposed wood, but it is not a reliable way to kill a mature tree. How vinegar works on plants

Vinegar contains acetic acid. At typical household strength (about 5% acetic acid), it burns leaf tissue on contact and will quickly brown and wilt soft, young plants. Horticultural vinegar (20% or higher) is much stronger and can cause severe burns, but even that acts mostly as a contact desiccant — it damages exposed tissues rather than moving throughout the tree’s vascular system.

That distinction matters. To kill a whole tree you need to stop the roots from carrying water and nutrients or destroy the living cambium layer under the bark. A contact-only herbicide like vinegar rarely does that on woody plants with established root systems.

When vinegar can work

  • Young seedlings and small saplings (a few inches tall) — repeated foliar applications of household vinegar can desiccate them.
  • Freshly cut stumps of small trees — applying a concentrated treatment to the stump surface may slow regrowth and speed decay.
  • Occasional targeted use where chemical herbicides aren’t an option — small, non-native volunteers in gravel driveways, for example.

When vinegar will not work well

  • Large or mature trees with deep root systems — vinegar won’t reach or kill the roots, and the canopy will re-sprout.
  • Trees with thick bark and strong cambium — contact damage won’t stop internal functions.
  • Situations where you need a quick, predictable outcome — vinegar is unpredictable beyond small plants.

Safe, practical methods using vinegar

If you decide to try vinegar, use it thoughtfully and safely. Here are methods that make sense, what I’ve tried, and what I recommend.

Foliar spray for seedlings and small saplings

  • Use household 5% vinegar for small plants. Spray the leaves thoroughly on a dry, warm day with no wind.
  • Repeat every few days until the plant dies. One application often only browns leaves temporarily.
  • Protect nearby desirable plants by covering them. Vinegar is non-selective and will burn anything it touches.

Cut-stump treatment

  • Cut the tree down safely to a fresh, flat stump. For small stumps this is my favorite approach.
  • Right after cutting, brush or pour concentrated horticultural vinegar onto the cambium (the exposed ring of living tissue) — this is when the wound is most vulnerable.
  • Cover the stump with plastic or a bucket to keep rain off for a few days to let the acid work.
  • Expect regrowth if roots are vigorous; follow up may be necessary.

Girdling plus vinegar

  • Girdling (removing a strip of bark around the trunk) severs the phloem and eventually starves the roots.
  • Applying vinegar to the girdled area can hasten the desiccation of exposed tissue, but girdling alone is the real killer.
  • This is slow and should only be used on trees you own; it can take months to years to die.

I once used household vinegar sprayed over and over on a sorrel patch invading my lawn. It browned out fast and didn’t return that season. A small maple seedling in the driveway I treated with repeated sprays died within a month. But a larger volunteer oak? Vinegar barely phased it.

Risks, safety, and environmental concerns

Vinegar at horticultural strengths is corrosive. Always wear eye protection, gloves, and long sleeves. Never use strong acetic acid in enclosed spaces or near pets and children. Avoid contact with metal tools and concrete which can be damaged.

There’s an environmental cost: pouring or spraying large amounts near the soil can change pH temporarily and harm nearby plants, beneficial organisms, and lawn grass. Runoff into storm drains or sensitive areas is a bad idea.

Don’t use vinegar or any method to harm trees that aren’t yours. Many communities protect mature street trees and trees on public property. If a tree poses a hazard or you want it removed, contact your municipal arborist. If neighbors’ trees are the issue, discuss it first — surprising damage to someone else’s tree can lead to disputes and liability.

Better alternatives for larger trees

  • Mechanical removal: stump grinding and root removal are often the fastest, most reliable solutions.
  • Professional arborist: for large, valuable, or hazardous trees, hire a certified arborist who can safely remove or treat the tree.
  • Systemic herbicides: glyphosate or triclopyr applied to cut stumps can move into the root system and reliably prevent resprouting. These are more effective than vinegar for woody plants but should be used responsibly.
  • Girdling for long-term removal: effective but slow; best when professional advice is used.

If the tree is tiny and in a non-sensitive area: try repeated foliar vinegar treatments or pour boiling water on the root crown for immediate effect. For small stumps, cut and treat with vinegar, but don’t be surprised if follow-up is needed. For anything larger than a small sapling, call a professional or use mechanical removal — it’s safer, faster, and less likely to damage the rest of your garden.

Final thoughts

Vinegar is a handy, low-toxicity tool for weeding and killing small volunteer plants. It’s appealing because it’s inexpensive and easy to find. But it is not a silver bullet for killing trees. Expect only modest success on small or freshly cut plants, and use stronger, more reliable methods for larger trees. Always protect yourself, the soil, and surrounding plants, and don’t act on someone else’s tree without permission.
