A moss stick for plants is a specially designed method for plants to grow upward rather than downward. It is created from a sturdy stick or pole that is covered with moss. Moss posts have a number of advantages for plants. First of all, they allow the plant to grow in any chosen direction, which is very convenient for creating an interesting garden design. In addition, moss posts help save water by keeping it close to the roots of the plants. This is especially important in hot climates where saving water is key. But in most cases, a moss pole is used to keep plants growing upward.

This method is good because it saves a lot of space in your home and allows you to grow large types of plants. Also, a moss pole helps to give it an interesting shape without too much of a monetary investment.

Almost any type of plant can be grown with a moss stick. Flowers, vegetables, fruits, and herbs are all good candidates for this gardening method. You can also use it to grow seedlings indoors so you can then transplant them into the garden. But still, hanging plants with vines or climbing species are best for a moss pole. Remember that a moss pole encourages plants to grow. So be prepared that it may start to grow faster than before.

How do you get a plant to stick to a moss stick?

The easiest way to get a plant to attach to a moss pole is to use hormone rooting powder. This powder can be found at any horticultural store. First, you need to cut off a small part of the plant stem (about an inch long). Dip it in the rooting hormone and then press it against the moss for a few minutes.

But there is another method, manual, that any beginning gardener can use.This process will depend on the type of plant you have. If it has thin vines, be careful, as it is very easy to damage them. Plants with thick stems have nothing to worry about, as they are very strong and will quickly be able to graft to a moss stick. To make a plant grow on a moss pole, you will need Velcro strips and garden hoses.

Tape the Velcro tape around the moss pole in a spiral, and glue a couple of plant leaves to the bottom strip. Guide the plant further this way as it grows. If it is a plant with thick stems, then tie them neatly with a garden hose. You will have to do this until the plant gets used to it and starts to grow right along the stick on its own.

Don’t tie the leaves of the plant too tightly so that you don’t squeeze them.

How to make a moss stick at home?

A moss pole can be made at home. To do this you will need:

  • Tight PVC pipe;
  • A tarpaulin (all work will be done on it, as making a moss stick is a messy business);
  • Scissors;
  • Rubber gloves;
  • Sphagnum moss;
  • Rope or fishing line;
  • A large bowl of water.

  1. Soak the moss sphagnum in a bowl of water. This is so that the roots of your plants will reach for the moss and also grow better on it. When you put the moss in the water, it needs about 20 minutes to soak in the water. Moss absorbs water very well, so you will need to refill the water. The moss itself will increase in size;
  2. After a while, you should start covering the PVC pipe with moss. To do this, take the moss out of the water and squeeze out the excess moisture. Carefully stick the moss to the PVC with a thin layer and secure it with a fishing line. Be sure to leave about 6-12 inches of the stack without the moss, as this is the support that will be in the soil. Don’t spare the moss on the post, because your plants’ aerial roots will have to grow into it later;
  3. Then stick the pole in the soil, in the pot where your plant is already blooming. Stick the pole in carefully so as not to damage the roots of your plant;
  4. Next, attach the plant to the moss pole as described above.

The moss pole is an easy to care for plant that needs to be watered from the top down. So here you have to pour water on top of the pole so that the moss gets watered and the aerial roots feed on this moisture.

Remember that you can’t separate the plant from the moss stick now. When the roots of your plant have already grown into the moss pole, it will be one complete plant. If your plant grows larger than the moss column, you can add part of the moss pole on top, rather than making a new one. If you transplant your plant, the moss stick will need to be transplanted with it.
