Why a mower leaves strips even when the blades are turning
An uncut strip is usually easy to spot: a narrow line of taller grass appears between passes, or one side of the mower leaves a faint but obvious trail that needs a second run. It is tempting to assume the blade is dull, but that is only one possible cause. On a mower that was cutting cleanly last week, the first things I check are blade condition, deck buildup, tire pressure, and overlap technique.
The useful clue is the shape of the missed grass. A consistent strip in the middle of every pass points to blade overlap or deck problems. A ragged strip that changes location usually points to grass conditions, mowing speed, or a blade that is not lifting the grass properly.
If the mower leaves exactly the same-width strip every time, do not keep mowing the lawn hoping it will improve. Stop after one pass and inspect the deck. Repeated passes only hide the symptom while wasting time.
Start with the pattern, not the repair
A strip on one side of the mower
If the missed grass is always along the right or left edge, you may simply not be overlapping enough. The cutting width printed on the mower is the maximum blade sweep, not the width you can reliably cover without overlap. On a 21-inch walk-behind mower, I normally overlap the previous pass by 2 to 3 inches. On uneven ground or thick turf, I use closer to 4 inches.
This is especially important with side-discharge mowers. The discharge side tends to push grass outward, and that grass can spring back upright after the mower has passed. A clean-looking pass can reveal a thin line ten minutes later as the grass dries and stands back up.
A strip between the blades on a riding mower
On a twin-blade or three-blade riding mower, a missed strip between blade paths is more likely a mechanical issue. The blades may not be overlapping correctly because one is bent, installed incorrectly, loose on its spindle, or spinning at reduced speed. A worn belt can also cause one blade to lag under load.
One realistic example: a 42-inch rider came in after its owner noticed a 3-inch stripe down the center of every pass. The lawn looked fine when it was short, but at 4 inches of spring growth the stripe was impossible to miss. The problem was not the blades themselves. One spindle pulley had a buildup of packed grass and belt debris under its guard, so the belt was riding high and slipping when the deck hit thicker grass. Cleaning the pulley and replacing the glazed belt fixed it immediately.
Random patches instead of a straight strip
Random tufts are often caused by mowing too fast, cutting wet grass, or trying to remove too much height in one pass. The mower blade needs enough airflow to lift grass before cutting it. When the deck is packed with damp clippings, airflow drops and grass bends under the deck rather than reaching the blade.
This is not always a mower fault. If you cut a lawn after a heavy morning dew, with the deck set low, and the grass is 5 inches tall, scattered uncut tufts are expected. Let the grass dry, raise the deck, and cut again later or the next day. That does not require a repair.
Inspect the blades before buying parts
Disconnect the spark plug wire on a gas mower, remove the battery or key on a cordless mower, and block the mower securely before reaching under the deck. On a riding mower, lower the deck onto blocks or follow the manual’s service position instructions. Do not rely on a jack alone.
Look for more than dullness. A blade can be sharp enough to cut paper and still leave strips if it is bent or installed upside down.
- Check that each blade is installed with the lift wing facing the deck, not the ground.
- Look along the blade length for bends, dents, or a twisted tip from striking a root or edging stone.
- Make sure the blade bolt is tight and the blade cannot rock on the spindle.
- Compare both ends of the blade. A badly worn end changes airflow and cutting width.
- Inspect for heavy clumps of dried grass stuck to the blade or underside of the deck.
A common mistake is sharpening a blade repeatedly until the cutting edge looks thin and aggressive. Lawn mower blades are not kitchen knives. They need a durable edge and a balanced shape. If the trailing lift area is worn away, sharpening will not restore the airflow that pulls grass upright. Replace the blade.
The deck is often the real culprit
A deck full of old clippings can cause poor cutting even with new blades. The buildup narrows the space where air should circulate, so the mower stops creating lift. You will usually notice this first in damp grass: the mower begins leaving wispy rows, clippings gather near the discharge opening, and the engine or motor sounds slightly loaded.
Scrape the underside of the deck clean with a plastic or wood scraper. A putty knife works, but be careful around blade edges. Check the discharge chute, mulching plug, and bagging tunnel as well. A partially blocked bagging chute can reduce deck airflow enough to leave thin strips behind.
Check deck level, but do not obsess over perfect measurements
For a riding mower, the deck should generally sit level side-to-side, with the front very slightly lower than the rear. A front-to-rear difference of about 1/8 to 1/4 inch is common, though the mower manual should be the final reference. If one side is significantly lower, the blades may cut unevenly and leave a strip where the higher side fails to reach.
Measure from the blade tip to a hard, level surface, not from the deck shell. The shell can be dented or slightly uneven while the blade path is still correct.
Do not ignore tire pressure and ground speed
Low tire pressure on one side of a riding mower tilts the whole deck. It is one of the cheapest fixes and one of the most overlooked. If the left rear tire is 5 PSI low, the deck can lean enough to create a visible uncut line on a short lawn.
With walk-behind mowers, speed matters more than people expect. If you are power-walking through thick fescue, the blade may not have time to recover between heavy clumps. Slow down for the first cut after rain, after fertilizer, or when grass has grown beyond its normal mowing height.
A quick way to isolate the cause
After cleaning the deck and checking the blades, test the mower on a dry, reasonably flat section of lawn. Set the deck one notch higher than usual. Mow two slow passes with 3 inches of overlap, then turn 90 degrees and mow across the same area.
- If the strip disappears, the issue was overlap, speed, or grass conditions.
- If the strip remains in the same location relative to the mower, inspect blades, spindles, belt tension, and deck level.
- If the strip appears only in thick or wet areas, focus on deck cleaning, mowing height, and slower travel speed.
- If one blade sounds different or stops quickly after disengaging the deck, inspect that spindle and belt drive before using the mower again.
When it is time for a shop visit
A bent spindle shaft, failing spindle bearing, cracked deck, or slipping belt under load is worth addressing promptly. You may notice vibration through the seat or handle, a scraping sound, uneven blade noise, or a fresh patch of black belt dust around a pulley. Those are not cosmetic issues; continued use can damage the deck or throw a belt.
For ordinary missed strips, though, the fix is usually less dramatic: clean the deck, replace a worn blade, inflate the tires, slow down, and overlap a little more. That boring combination solves far more mowing complaints than an expensive repair ever will.
