Why a Mower Deck Leaves a Mohawk Strip
A mohawk strip is the narrow ridge of taller grass left between the blade paths after you mow. It usually runs down the middle of the deck’s travel path, and once you notice it, it is hard to unsee. The frustrating part is that the mower can sound normal, drive normally, and still leave that strip every pass.
On most riding mowers and zero-turns, a true mohawk is not caused by dull blades alone. Dull blades make the whole lawn look ragged. A mohawk usually means the blades are not cutting at the same height, are not overlapping enough, or one blade is not spinning at full speed.
If the strip follows the mower in a straight, consistent line on every pass, look at deck setup and blade operation before blaming the grass.
Start by Looking at the Pattern
The pattern tells you a lot before you remove a single bolt. Mow a short test pass on dry, reasonably level grass and look behind the deck from a few angles.
A narrow, clean strip down the center
This is the classic sign of blades that are not overlapping properly. The deck may be sitting too high in the middle, one side may be lower than the other, or a blade may be installed incorrectly.
A wide uneven band with torn grass
This points more toward slow blade speed, a slipping belt, clogged deck discharge, or mowing grass that is too tall or wet for the ground speed you are using.
A strip that comes and goes
Check the lawn before tearing into the mower. Grass flattened by tire tracks, morning dew, or a recent rain can spring back after the deck passes. That is not always a deck defect. If the strip disappears after the lawn dries or after mowing in a different direction, the mower may be fine.
The First Checks That Solve Most Mohawk Problems
Park on flat concrete, turn off the engine, remove the key, set the parking brake, and disconnect the spark plug wires if you will be working under the deck. On a zero-turn, also make sure the blades cannot be engaged accidentally while you are checking things.
Do not judge deck level by the top shell of the deck. Measure from the blade tip to the ground. Rotate each blade so its tip points side to side, then measure the left and right tips. After that, rotate the blades front to back and measure the front and rear tips.
- Check that both blade cutting edges sit at nearly the same side-to-side height.
- Confirm the front of the deck is usually about 1/8 to 1/4 inch lower than the rear, unless your mower manual specifies otherwise.
- Inspect every blade for bends, cracks, rounded cutting edges, and heavy buildup underneath.
- Make sure the blade part number and length match the deck.
- Check that blade wings are facing up toward the deck, not down toward the grass.
- Look for a loose spindle, worn pulley, frayed belt, or belt that rides low in a pulley groove.
A small difference matters. On a 42-inch two-blade deck, a blade tip that sits 3/8 inch higher than the other can leave a visible center ridge even though the deck looks level from the seat.
The Common Mistake: Sharpening Blades but Ignoring Their Shape
People often sharpen a blade repeatedly until the cutting edge looks great, then wonder why the mower still misses grass in the middle. Blade length and lift shape matter just as much as sharpness.
A badly worn blade gets shorter at the outer ends, especially after years of sharpening and sand damage. It may still cut grass, but the overlap between the two blades becomes smaller. That reduced overlap creates the mohawk strip.
I have seen this on an older 46-inch lawn tractor where the owner had sharpened the same blades for four seasons. The blades were only about 1/4 inch shorter than new, but both outer tips had worn into rounded shapes. On dry grass, the mower left a strip about two inches wide down the center. New OEM-style blades fixed it immediately; no deck adjustment was needed.
Using the wrong replacement blades causes the same issue. A blade that is only half an inch too short may physically fit the spindle and bolt on without trouble, but it can leave an uncut lane. Measure the old blade from tip to tip, then verify the correct replacement by mower model and deck size rather than buying “close enough” blades from a bin.
Check for a Bent Blade Before Adjusting the Deck
A bent blade is one of the quickest things to miss. From above, it can look fine. The giveaway is that one blade tip measures differently from the other when you rotate the blade 180 degrees.
A simple bent-blade test
With the mower safely parked on level ground, measure one blade tip to the floor. Rotate that same blade half a turn and measure the opposite tip. If the readings differ by more than about 1/8 inch, the blade is likely bent, the spindle is loose, or the deck shell is damaged.
Do not try to hammer a mower blade straight. Replacing it is safer and usually cheaper than dealing with vibration, poor cut quality, and a possible spindle failure later.
When the Belt Is the Real Problem
If the mohawk appears mostly in thicker grass, listen carefully while mowing. A healthy deck has a steady cutting sound. A slipping belt often produces a brief squeal, a change in blade tone, or a strip that gets worse when you climb a slight slope or hit dense growth.
Look at the belt with the engine off. A belt that is glazed, cracked, narrow from wear, or covered in oily residue can slip under load. Also inspect the idler pulley tensioner. A weak spring or seized pulley may let the belt run well enough in the driveway but not well enough in actual grass.
This is especially common after a mower has been parked outdoors. Rainwater and grass debris can seize an idler pulley bearing. The belt still turns, but it drags, heats up, and loses blade speed when the deck works hard.
Fix the Deck Setup, Then Change How You Mow
Once the blades, belt, and spindles check out, level the deck according to the manual. Most decks should be level side to side and slightly lower at the front. The slight forward pitch helps the front edge cut first and lets clippings clear instead of being recut inside the deck.
Practical mowing adjustments that actually help
- Mow dry grass whenever possible; wet grass bends over and clumps under the deck.
- Slow down in thick growth instead of increasing engine speed beyond normal operating RPM.
- Keep the engine at full mowing throttle so blade tip speed stays high.
- Raise the deck one setting if you are removing more than about one-third of the grass height.
- Overlap passes by a few inches until you confirm the cut is clean.
- Clean packed grass from the deck underside after mowing damp conditions.
The non-obvious part is that driving slower cannot compensate for low engine RPM. Many operators reduce throttle and ground speed together to “go easy” on the mower. That lowers blade speed and can make a mohawk worse. Keep mowing RPM up; control cut quality with travel speed.
When You Do Not Need to Fix Anything
If the strip only appears on a lawn with heavy dew, disappears by afternoon, and does not show up when you mow dry grass, avoid chasing a mechanical repair. The grass is likely being pressed flat by the front tires or airflow from the deck before the blade reaches it. Change mowing direction, mow later in the day, or make a light second pass across the affected area.
A real mechanical mohawk stays visible after the grass dries and repeats in the same location behind the deck. That is the one worth fixing.
Quick Way to Narrow It Down
- Consistent center strip on dry grass: check blade length, blade orientation, and deck level.
- Strip worsens in tall grass: inspect belt tension, pulley condition, and mowing speed.
- Uneven cut plus vibration: suspect a bent blade, loose spindle, or damaged pulley.
- Problem started after blade replacement: verify the blade length and lift design.
- Problem only happens in wet grass: clean the deck and mow when the lawn is dry.
In practice, the fastest repair is usually not a major deck rebuild. It is often a proper set of blades, a careful blade-tip measurement, and a deck adjustment made on level ground. Take ten extra minutes to diagnose the pattern first, and you are far less likely to replace parts that were never the problem.
